Dumais advances after taking seventh in 3-meter semifinals

MELBOURNE, Australia – Troy Dumais took seventh in the men’s 3-meter semifinals Friday afternoon to earn a spot in Friday night’s finals at the FINA World Championships.

He scored 434.80 points to qualify for the finals, and with his guaranteed top 12-finish, he also secured one spot for the U.S. in the 2008 Olympic Games. The top 12 finishers in each individual event earn spots for their countries on that event for the Games.

Two Chinese divers will enter the finals as the top seeds. Qin Kai led the semifinal field with 503.35 points, and He Chong was second at 493.65.

Dumais, who won a silver medal on 3-meter at the 2005 World Championships, scored 88.40 points on his forward 2 ½ with 2 twists in the second round. It was the best score of the round.

The finals will be held at 8:30 p.m. Friday (5:30 a.m. Eastern time). USA’s Allison Brennan will compete in the women’s 1-meter finals prior to that. Those finals begin at 6 p.m. in Melbourne.
