Michelle Cabassol wins bronze at Canada Cup
MONTREAL – One week after winning two senior national titles, 16-year-old Michelle Cabassol (Montgomery, Texas) claimed her first senior international medal with a bronze medal in the women’s platform finals Saturday at the FINA Canada Cup.
Cabassol totaled 328.85 points for the bronze, scoring 75 or more points on two of her dives, an inward 3 ½ and a back 2 ½ with 1 ½ twists. Canadian Olympians Meghan Benfeito and Roseline Filion scored 342.90 and 342.50 points for gold and silver.
Also on Saturday, Abby Johnston (Upper Arlington, Ohio/ Durham, N.C.) and Victoria Ishimatsu (Seal Beach, Calif./ Los Angeles, Calif.) finished fourth with 276.30 points in the women’s 3-meter synchro contest, which was won by Australia’s Briony Cole and Sharleen Stratton.
On Sunday, Johnston placed fifth in the individual 3-meter finals with 276.00 points. Stratton also won gold on that event. Ishimatsu just missed joining Johnston in the finals when she finished seventh with 288.40 points, less a point from advancing, in Friday's semis.
On Thursday, Burkley Showe (Columbus, Ohio) placed seventh in the men’s 3-meter with 393.15 points, and Victoria Lamp (Knoxville, Tenn.) made her senior international debut by finishing 11 th on platform with 269.30 points.
