U.S. wins six medals - including two gold - on last day of Italian Grand Prix

ROME – Led by a pair of gold medals from Chris Colwill (Brandon, Fla.), Team USA won six medals Sunday at the Italian Grand Prix to finish the three-day event with 10 medals.

Colwill, who had already won a bronze medal on 3-meter earlier in the week, teamed up with Jevon Tarantino (Boca Raton, Fla.) in men’s synchronized 3-meter on Sunday and scored 406.95 points to win the gold. Later in the day, Colwill scored 405.50 points to take the gold in the men’s 1-meter contest.

Two other U.S. synchro teams won silver medals Sunday. The men’s 10-meter synchro team of David Boudia (Noblesville, Ind.) and Thomas Finchum (Indianapolis, Ind.) scored 448.62 for second place behind China’s Li Teng and Li Junbai. Christina Loukas (Riverwoods, Ill.) and Amanda Miller (Centreville, Va.) won the women’s 3-meter synchro silver with 302.10 points, just .42 points behind the Italian team of Francesca Dallape and Noemi Batki.

The women’s 10-meter synchro team of Mary Beth Dunnichay (Elwood, Ind.) and Haley Ishimatsu (Seal Beach, Calif.) scored 315.72 points for a bronze. Canada’s Emilie Heymans and Marie-Eve Marleau won gold with 340.68 points.

Loukas added a second medal by picking up a bronze with 261.65 points in the women’s 1-meter event. Italy’s Maria Marconi won the gold with 273.95 points. Miller finished fifth at 256.85.

After winning 10 medals in Italy, the U.S. increased its 2007 Grand Prix medal count to 24 – twice as many as it won a year ago. Those 24 medals also came in fewer meets. Last year, the U.S. competed in seven Grand Prix meets; this year, the U.S. went to four.
