A message from USA Diving CEO Debbie Hesse on International Travel Policy

Dear USA Diving Members,

I would like to further clarify and explain USA Diving’s position on international travel. USA Diving is NOT trying to stop teams/groups from traveling to international events, training camps, or exchanges. We are only pointing out that all athletes, officials and coaches traveling to these events or exchanges must be members of USA Diving.  We are simply trying to educate people on the facts as they have been presented to us by FINA. In addition, the trip must be approved by USA Diving. This is so we protect everyone against any FINA sanctions that might result in not doing so.

We wanted to re-release the information so that everyone followed the rules after input from an international FINA Bureau member at our board meeting in May. This information was originally distributed in 2005.

Please note that if you are not currently a USA Diving member and are traveling internationally, the least expensive membership option is only $25, although you can choose to join at a higher level. Please remember to have your waiver signed and returned so that your membership is considered current. In addition, please have the organizer make an official request for USA Diving to approve the trip.

For those interested, I just heard about the AAU trip to China. USA Diving has verbally approved this trip, as long as every athlete, coach and official is registered with USA Diving.

The same would apply for any other international trips, whether for a competition, training trip or exchange. If anyone in the group is or will be a coach or diver in any FINA international event and one person on the trip is not a member, USA Diving cannot give permission for the trip and everyone could be penalized. Please keep in mind that these penalties don’t affect just the United States. The country you would be visiting could also suffer similar consequences by allowing a coach, diver or official who is not a USA Diving member to participate. Again, we are not trying to stop anyone from traveling and having exchanges; we just want to make sure everyone follows FINA rules so no one gets penalized.

If you have any questions, please contact Linda Paul or Debbie Hesse. Thank you.
