World University Games: Horner places seventh on 1-meter, Loukas moves on to 3-meter finals

BANGKOK - Florida State University sophomore Terry Horner (Longwood, Fla.) finished seventh in the men’s 1-meter finals at the World University Games on Thursday. The reigning NCAA champion scored 390.05 in the final session.

Horner, who advanced by winning his semifinal earlier in the day, found himself in the middle of the pack with a score of 195.50 halfway through the competition. He slipped in the rankings in the fourth round, when his execution of a reverse 2 ½ somersault tuck earned him just 43.5 points. The 19-year-old made a valiant comeback attempt with his final two dives, scoring 72.0 points for a back 2 ½ somersault tuck and finishing with his highest score of the day, 79.05 points for his inward 2 ½ somersault tuck. Horner finished 29.95 points off the medal stand.

Chinese divers Zhang Xinhua and Luo Yutong Luo claimed gold and silver respectively while Yuriy Shlyakhov of the Ukraine took bronze.

Purdue's Zach Schultz (Chicago, Ill.) placed fifth in semifinal A, scoring 312.65 to finish 12th overall. Jesse Rappaport (Glassboro, N.J./Indiana) scored 320.35 points to place 15th in the prelims.

Christina Loukas (Riverwoods, Ill./Indiana) will compete for a medal Saturday in the women’s 3-meter finals after finishing sixth in Thursday’s semifinal. Loukas scored 313.80 points in the contest, which was interrupted by a brief power outage.  Mary Yarrison (Springfield, Va./Texas), who won a 1-meter bronze on Wednesday, finished 14th with 263.45 points.

Loukas strung together a consistent program in the semifinal, posting a low score of 55.80 and a high of 67.50. She earned the high score on her final dive of the night, a forward 2 ½ somersault, 1 twist pike, that bumped her from seventh to sixth place in the last round.

A trio of Olympians claimed the top three spots in the semifinal. China’s Li Ting (359.45) was first, followed by Mexico’s Paola Espinosa (341.70) and Laura Sanchez (339.70).

Sarah Chrzanowski (West Bloomfield, Mich./Eastern Michigan) was 23rd with a score of 235.20 in the preliminaries.
