Jones moves on to 1-meter final at World University Games

Harrison Jones (Spring, Texas/Arizona State University) advanced to the men’s 1-meter final as World University Games action continued Saturday in Kazan, Russia. Jones will compete in the final on Monday.

After placing eighth in the preliminaries, Jones scored 405.50 points to place second behind Mexico’s Rommel Pacheco in semifinal A to move on to the finals. Jones closed out his semifinal list with 74.40 points on his inward 2 ½ tuck, his highest score of the day.

The top two finishers in the preliminaries – China’s Lin Jin and Russia’s Evgenii Novoselov – automatically advanced to the finals, with the next 10 finishers competing in two semifinal fields. The top three from each semifinal advanced to the finals.

Sam Dorman (Tempe, Ariz./University of Miami) also advanced to the semifinals, scoring 366.45 points to finish fifth in semifinal B and 10th overall.

Zac Nees (Hatfield, Pa./University of Miami) also competed in the 1-meter prelims, finishing 24th with 223.95 points.

The diving events at the World University Games continue through July 12. Sunday’s competition will include Samantha Pickens (Murrysville, Pa./University of Arizona) in the women’s 1-meter final.
