Six cities being considered as potential sites for 2016 U.S. Olympic Team Trials – Diving

INDIANAPOLIS – USA Diving, in partnership with the United States Olympic Committee, today announced that six cities are being considered as potential sites to host the 2016 U.S. Olympic Team Trials – Diving. The Trials will determine the divers who will represent the United States on the 2016 U.S. Olympic Team in Rio de Janeiro.

The cities moving forward in the bid process are:

• Atlanta, Ga.
• Greensboro, N.C.
• Indianapolis, Ind.
• Minneapolis, Minn.
• Riverside, Calif.
• Tucson, Ariz.

“We are thrilled to see so many incredible cities express an interest in hosting our Olympic Trials. The Trials are such a special event for us, and we are looking forward to seeing what these cities can offer as we aim to make the 2016 Trials our best yet,” USA Diving President and CEO Linda Paul said.

A committee of USA Diving staff and board members will be visiting each of the six cities and will further evaluate the cities’ bid proposals before selecting finalists on October 21. The evaluation process will continue through the end of the year.

USA Diving will also consult with USOC broadcast partner NBC throughout the process. NBC and NBC Sports provided 14 hours of live and taped diving coverage of the 2012 U.S. Olympic Team Trials and will provide similar coverage of the 2016 Trials as well.

A final recommendation will be made to the USA Diving Board of Directors and the USOC. A host city is expected to be named in December 2013.

USA Diving is coming off its most successful Olympic Games since 1988, having won four medals – one gold, one silver and two bronze – at the 2012 Games in London.

  1. “The Riverside Sports Commission, on behalf of the State of California’s entire diving community, is extraordinarily pleased and honored to have made the shortlist of cities vying for this prestigious event. We are committed to assisting USA Diving in conducting a technically flawless competition to allow the selection of the best athletes to represent the United States in the Rio Olympic Games. We are looking forward to welcoming America’s top athletes, family and fans to our City to enjoy our hospitality and welcome and cheer on our nation’s greatest divers.”

  2. Riverside is the place to be for the US Olympic Diving Trials. The weather, the facilities, and the volunteers combine to make Riverside an ideal location for this event. Less than 50 miles from LA in the heart of the Southern California metro region of 20 million people doesn’t hurt either. This community would be proud to host this event.

  3. Riverside is ready, willing and more than able! We have brand new first class facilities just waiting for this event. We have proven we can handle Hollywood, we can certainly handle the Olympics. Great hotels, restaurants and close to everything, everywhere. What we don’t have, that the other cities on the short list do have, is a big metropolis of traffic jams. We have an airport just a few minutes away that doesn’t require an extra day of planning to fly in and out of. Besides all that, Riverside is an All American City! Give us the chance to prove we are a World Class City!

  4. Riverside, Ca. is absolutely where the U.S. Olympic Diving Trials should be held. Not only do we have the facilities, but the room and volunteers who are ready and willing to make it happen. The riverside downtown area is known for it’s Colleges, Hotels and Restaurants. Riverside welcomes these amazing athletes and wishes the best!

  5. Riverside is the perfect place for this very prestigious event! We have the perfect facilities and Riverside volunteers are the best! Come to Riverside and let us help make this the best Olympic Diving Trials in history!! :)

  6. Definitely Riverside! This is a large city with a small town feel. Very welcoming, and the new facilities are world class. Amenities nearby and many recreational activities as well. Come to Riverside!!

  7. Definitely bring it to Riverside! We are the home of Tyler Clary, 2012 Gold medal winning Olympian, NBA and WNBA stars Reggie and Cheryl Miller, Olympian Cynthia “Sippy” Woodhead, several pro baseball players – we are a city with deep athletic roots! We love celebrating our athletes. We are also known worldwide as the City of Arts & Innovation and were voted the 2012 Intelligent Community of the Year. The best part of Riverside from my personal perspective, is that everyone knows each other. We have huge pride for our law enforcement officers and firefighters, and a small town feel even though our population is over 300,000. Our mayor and even our State Assemblyman and Congressman are all teachers. It is a very family oriented city – the kind that you would want to raise your kids, yet we maintain out status as an intellectual community with 6 different colleges/universities within city limits, and free WiFi throughout the city. This is a forward thinking, intellectual community that still holds on to it’s family values. Definitely why I moved here 9 years ago, and am still here.

  8. Did I mention that Riverside was the location for the celebrity diving reality show Splash? We have an awesome catering company a few blocks away that catered during the TV series, and can definitely handle the trials. And our surplus of volunteers in our community would be ecstatic to work this event. Bottom line, the entire community of Riverside would be thrilled and dedicated to making this a fantastic historical event. Our community would be nothing short of completely benefited in the most positive way, and this giving community would be honored to share our great fortune with the rest of the world.

  9. Ask any athlete, coach or spectator that has been to the Riverside Aquatics Complex and they will probably tell you it was one of the best experiences they’ve ever had. Of course, we locals already knew that! This city is blessed with an unmatched combination of 1) a supportive community 2)a top notch sport commission and 3)city leadership 100% dedicated to sport and athletics. You’ve got to be here to experience everything that’s great about Riverside. Welcome USA Diving!

  10. Riverside is the best spot for the U.S. Olympic Trials! The City offers the perfect venues for the competitors, coaches, press, and spectators!!! Being an hour away from the heart of Los Angeles and Orange Counties, Riverside offers the exposure of the 2nd largest Media Market in the nation, while at the same time has the ability to maintain it’s own identity as a culturally historic Community. Riverside offers unique destinations such as the Mission Inn, which is accompanied by a variety of cultural museums, agricultural sites, and 3 nationally recognized Universities. Dining and Entertainment Venues are continuously expanding as result of Riverside’s continuous growth as a vital part of the Southland Community. Riverside is a great City and would take great honor and pride in having the opportunity to host this most prestigious event.

  11. Riverside, CA, is the best place for the Olympic Team Trials! The City, the venue and the people are a perfect fit to make the event the best EVER!
