Samantha Bromberg added to U.S. roster for FINA Diving World Cup

Samantha “Murphy” Bromberg (Bexley, Ohio/Austin, Texas) has been added to the U.S. roster for the FINA Diving World Cup, to be held February 19-24 in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Bromberg will compete in women’s 10-meter.

Bromberg was added to the roster after Amy Cozad (Indianapolis, Ind./Bloomington, Ind.) withdrew from the individual women’s 10-meter event.

Cozad, who was named to the team after winning individual and synchronized national titles on 10-meter at last week’s USA Diving Winter National Championships, decided to give up her individual spot in order to give the U.S. the best chance of qualifying for the 2016 Olympic Games.

The FINA World Cup is the last opportunity for countries to qualify for the 2016 Olympic Games. Each country may qualify a maximum of two quota spots in each individual event; Cozad already earned a quota spot for the U.S. by virtue of her sixth-place finish at the 2015 World Championships. A diver cannot earn more than one quota spot, so with Cozad withdrawing from the World Cup, the U.S. will now have two divers competing to secure a second women’s 10-meter quota spot.

Jessica Parratto (Dover, N.H./Bloomington, Ind.) will also compete women’s 10-meter at the World Cup. She was second to Cozad at the national championships. Bromberg was next in line to make the World Cup team per the selection procedures and will take Cozad’s place in the individual event.

The divers will aim for a top-18 finish at the World Cup to qualify the second individual Olympic spot for the United States. Parratto was 14th and Bromberg 15th on 10-meter at the 2014 FINA World Cup in Shanghai. Parratto also competed on 10-meter at the 2015 World Championships, where she placed 21st.

Cozad will still compete women’s synchronized 10-meter with an Olympic berth on the line at the World Cup. She and Parratto won their third national title together at the Winter Nationals to earn the World Cup berth on that event.

All Olympic quota spots earned are for the U.S., not the individual divers or teams. The U.S. will select its Olympic team at the U.S. Olympic Team Trials for diving in Indianapolis from June 18-26.
