SHINE AT WORLD CUP DIVING TRIALS
Wilkinson, Hildebrand, T. Dumais Earn Spots on Team

 HUNTERSVILLE,
N.C. – Olympic gold medallist Laura Wilkinson (Spring,
Texas) and 2000 Olympians Sara Hildebrand (St. Paul, Minn.)
and Troy Dumais (Ventura, Calif.) earned spots on the World
Cup Diving Team on the final day of the 2004 World Cup Diving
Trials.
Divers qualifying for the World Cup Team will compete at
the 14th FINA Diving World Cup, February 18-22, in Athens,
Greece. The top two male and female athletes in each individual
event and the top team in each synchronized event earn spots
on the team.
In the men’s 3-meter springboard event, Dumais dominated
the competition with a 50-point margin of victory.
“I treat every event like I’m competing against
the best in the world,” said Dumais. “I’m
happy to be going to Greece.”
A fierce battle for the second World Cup Team spot developed
between Justin Wilcock (Smithfield, Utah) and the University
of Tennessee’s Phillip Jones (Lexington, Ky.). Jones
led Wilcock by 12 points after the semifinals, but Wilcock
scored 9’s on his fourth and fifth dives (out of six)
to pull ahead for good. Wilcock finished with 1080.81 points
to Jones’s 1072.02 points.
In the women’s platform event, Wilkinson came back
from a 17-point deficit after the semifinals to win the
event by 31 points.
“I put a little too much pressure on myself and ended
up playing it safe in the prelims,” said Wilkinson.
“I came into finals with a new attitude and didn’t
hold back on my dives.”
Wilkinson ended with 838.32 points and Hildebrand finished
with 806.91 points.
