Gracia Leydon Mahoney (Newton, Mass.) earned second place in the U.S. Olympic Committee’s Female Athlete of the Month voting for October.
Leydon Mahoney represented the U.S. at the FINA World Junior Championships in Adelaide, Australia last month, where she rallied to win the gold medal on 3-meter springboard. In fourth place with one round of dives to go, Leydon Mahoney responded with 73.95 points on her reverse 1 ½ with 2 ½ twists, earning a pair of 9s from the judges. The 73.95 was the highest score by any diver throughout the final and enough to push her to the top of the standings with 463.10 points. China’s Zheng Qulin was second with 460.40.
Leydon Mahoney also competed on 1-meter at Junior Worlds and led the U.S. with a fifth-place finish on the event.
She was also recognized in Sports Illustrated’s Faces in the Crowd for her accomplishments.
Paratriathlete Melissa Stockwell, who won her third consecutive ITU Paratriathlon World Championships title, was named Female Athlete of the Month. Skier Ted Ligety was voted Male Athlete of the Month, while Team of the Month honors went to tennis doubles partners Bob and Mike Bryan.
Each National Governing Body may nominate one female, one male and one team per discipline. A voting panel selects the winners from the pool of nominees with online fan voting via Twitter accounting for 10 percent of the total vote.
