Remembering Coach Dick Kimball
It is with a heavy heart that I share the news of Coach Dick Kimball's passing. Dick was one of the most influential figures in the history of diving in the United States.
There are many ways to measure a career like Dick's. We could speak of the Olympic teams he led, the championships he helped define, or the countless athletes who reached the highest levels of our sport under his guidance. Those accomplishments are extraordinary and enduring.
But today, I want to reflect on Dick Kimball, the man.
Dick was a man of principle, of integrity and of discipline. He believed in doing things the right way, always. He held himself and those around him to a high standard, not out of expectation, but out of respect for the sport and for the people in it. He demanded commitment, but he gave even more in return.
For those who had the privilege of knowing him, Dick's impact went far beyond the diving well. He shaped lives. He instilled confidence, accountability and a sense of purpose. He made people better, not just as divers, but as individuals. His influence will continue to be felt for generations through the athletes, coaches and leaders he helped develop.
On a personal level, I am proud to have been a Kimball diver. That connection is something I carry with deep gratitude. Like so many others, my life is better because I had the opportunity to learn from him and to be part of what he built.
Dick Kimball's legacy is not only written in record books or medals. It lives in the character of the people he shaped, in the values he upheld and in the standard he set for all of us in this sport.
He will be deeply missed.
On behalf of USA Diving, I extend our sincere condolences to Dick's family, his former athletes and all who were fortunate enough to know him.
Sincerely,
Lee Michaud
President, USA Diving
