USA Notches Two Fourth-Place Finishes at World Cup Super Final

The U.S. picked up a pair of fourth-place finishes at the World Aquatics World Cup Super Final, held May 1-3 in Beijing.  

ElliReese Niday finished fourth in the women’s 10-meter event, and Anna Kwong and Sophie Verzyl placed fourth in women’s synchronized 3-meter.  

Kwong and Verzyl finished with 276.15 points for fourth place among eight teams in the women’s synchronized 3-meter event. China’s Chen Yiwen and Chen Jia took gold at 331.05. Australia’s Maddison Keeney and Alysha Koloi scored 299.94 for silver, with bronze going to Great Britain’s Scarlet Mew Jensen and Yasmin Harper at 294.60. 

Twelve divers qualify for the Super Final in each individual event. The competition begins with six head-to-head matchups consisting of three dives, with the winners of each advancing to one of two semifinals, when two (women) or three (men) dives are performed and added to the scores from the head-to-head round. The top two in each semifinal then advance to the finals, with divers doing a full list. 

Niday was paired against Australia’s Ellie Cole in the head-to-head matchup on 10-meter and prevailed 220.40-209.60 to advance to the semifinals. She then finished second with 347.55 points in her semifinal to advance to the final. Niday scored 292.65 for fourth in the final, with China’s Linjing Jiang winning gold at 397.95. Russia’s Anna Konanykhina scored 319.20 for silver, and Germany’s Pauline Pfeif took bronze with 317.00 points.  

Jack Ryan represented the United States in men’s 3-meter and just missed advancing to the semifinals by 1.45 points, as Canada’s Carson Paul edged him 197.00-195.55 in the head-to-head contest. Ryan’s score placed him 10th overall. 

In women’s 3-meter, Kyndal Knight was paired with eventual silver medalist Chen Yiwen of China in the head-to-head matchup. Knight scored 157.40 to Chen’s 189.00 and finished 12th overall.  

The U.S. also qualified for the Super Final in the mixed 3-meter and 10-meter team event. Ryan, Verzyl, Sophie McAfee and Carson Tyler combined for 360.70 points and eighth place.   

Divers and qualified for the World Cup Super Final based on performances at the World Cup stop one held February 26-March 1 in Montreal.
