Herrera takes Seventh in Men’s Three Meter on Final Day of FINA World Cup

Tokyo, Japan- On the final day of the 2021 FINA Diving World Cup in Tokyo, Japan Briadam Herrera competed in the semifinals and finals of the Men’s Three Meter Springboard competition where he finished seventh. Herrera, who qualified 10th in prelims and 12th in semifinals ended the day with a total score of 411.4 in his final round. His best dive of the finals was his final dive, a reverse 1 ½ somersault 3 ½ twist free dive in which he scored a 78.75.
Hererra capped off a week of strong performances from the USA Diving squad. On the first day of competition, the synchro squads of Sarah Bacon and Kassidy Cook in the Women’s 3m and David Dinsmore and Brandon Loschiavo in the Men’s 10m both qualified for finals with Cook and Bacon going on to earn an Olympic quota spot in their event with their fifth-place finish. On the second day, the Men’s 3m synchro duo of Mike Hixon and Andrew Capobianco qualified the U.S.’s spot to Tokyo with a fourth-place finish.
The following day, Bacon and Samantha Pickens solidified both U.S. spots for Women’s 3m by qualifying for the semifinals and subsequent finals in the event. Bacon would go on to earn the Silver medal, marking the first time a U.S. woman has medaled in the event in over 30 years. Zachary Cooper also competed in the 10-meter individual, qualifying for the finals in his first-ever World event.
“I am extremely proud of our entire team,” said Dan Laak, High Performance Director for USA Diving, “From start to finish, our athletes came to compete. To have Briadam make finals and earn a top 10 finish was a great way to end the trip. We are coming home with five more Olympic Spots and Team USA is coming home with the confidence of making the finals and the valuable experience of competing under pressure.”
The 2021 FINA Diving World Cup served as the final qualifier for nations to earn Olympic quota spots. USA Diving ended the event having qualified for the games in 11 out of 12 possible berths. The final U.S. Diving Olympic Team will be decided at the 2021 Olympic Team Trials taking place June 6-13, 2021 at the IUPUI Natatorium in Indianapolis, Indiana.
