Team USA wins three medals at FINA Diving World Cup

Nike Agunbiade (Unattached) won bronze in women’s platform while Tyler Downs (RipFest)/Greg Duncan (Purdue Diving) and Kristen Hayden (Johansen Diving Academy)/Brooke Schultz (Unattached) earned Team USA a pair of synchronized diving medals Saturday at the FINA Diving World Cup in Berlin.

 

Agunbiade won another medal at the FINA Diving World Cup, this time in the individual platform final after taking second in synchronized platform on Friday. Agunbiade finished with 298.70 points for bronze in the individual 10-meter final, highlighted by a first-round back 2 1/2 with 1 ½ twists for 70.40 points. China took the top two spots, with Chen Yuxi claiming gold and Quan Hongchan taking silver. USA’s Katrina Young (Trojan Dive Club), Agunbiade’s synchro partner, also advanced to the individual 10-meter final and finished with 274.65 points for fifth.

 

Downs and Duncan came away with silver in the men’s synchronized 3-meter competition after finishing with 354.00 points. The pair's strongest dive came in the fifth round with their inward 2½ pike, which scored 69.30 points. China’s pair of Cao Yuan and Wang Zonguan won the gold medal in the event with 442.68 points, and Australia’s Shixin Li and Lachlan Cronin scoring 349.41 points for bronze.

 

Team USA added a bronze medal in the women’s 3-meter synchronized event with Hayden and Schultz scoring 257.97 points for third. Hayden and Schultz held the bronze position throughout the entire competition and ended the contest with 63 points on their forward 2 ½ with one twist in the final round. The Chinese pair of Chang Yani  and Chen Yiwen won gold at 330.03, and Germany’s Saskia Oettinghaus and Jana Rother took the silver medal at 272.94.

 

Competition at the Berlin World Cup ends Sunday. Sunday’s competition begins at 8 a.m. EDT with the women's 3-meter event followed by men's platform and the mixed team event. FINA's YouTube Channel will stream all competitions and have replays of the Berlin World Cup.
