Krysta Palmer and Hailey Hernandez competed in the semifinals of the Women’s 3-Meter Springboard competition at the Tokyo Olympic Games advancing to tomorrow’s finals by placing fifth and tenth respectively. Palmer and Hernandez competed against a field of 18 athletes today, which had been narrowed down from 27 after the preliminary round of competition that took place July 30, 2021.

Both divers got off to a slow start in today’s semifinal round, sitting on the bubble of the top 12 placing needed through to the finals ending the third round in 11th and 12th place. Both divers ended their lists with solid fourth and fifth dives with Palmer jumping from to eighth place after the fourth round and then fifth at the end of the final round after doing her double-out for 7’s and earning 71.45 points on the dive. Palmer is one of only four competitors in today’s event to compete a dive with a 3.4 or higher degree of difficulty with herself and Canadian Jennifer Abel being the only two to advance into tomorrow’s finals.

“Today I just came in knowing that it’s just extra. Making it into semifinals today I really tried to see it as a bonus round because after my performance yesterday being a little shaky, I just felt blessed to be here today and so I think really improving on my dives from yesterday is how today went,” said Palmer, “I know that I can make more improvements on my dives for tomorrow, and I’m just really excited to represent my country tomorrow alongside Hailey in the finals, I just think it’s really awesome that we both made it to finals.”

Hernandez, one of two 18-year-olds to advance to the finals, continued the consistency we saw from her in the preliminary round scoring mostly 6.5’s and 7’s on her dives throughout the five rounds with her best dive being her third, a back two- and one-half somersaults tuck for 7.5’s and a total of 63 points.

“Coming out of my semis, I know that I was capable of so much more but I’m just happy that I made it into the finals and have the opportunity to do my list again and I’m just so excited to represent my country,” said Hernandez following her performance.

The final round of the Women’s 3-Meter Springboard competition at the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games will take place Sunday August 1, 2021 at 3pm local time and 2pm EST. The finals will be aired live on USA Network as well as on NBCOlympics.com.
