USA Diving announces roster updates for FINA World Championships

Daryn Wright (Plainfield, Ind.) and Max Flory (Fairfax, Va.) have been selected to compete in the mixed team event at the FINA World Championships in Budapest, Hungary, and USA Diving has announced several additional roster updates.

Diving events at the World Championships kick off Sunday, June 26 with men’s synchronized 3-meter. Tyler Downs (Ballwin, Mo.) will now dive with Quinn Henninger (Denver, Colo.) in that event after Greg Duncan (Oakton, Va.) scratched due to injury. Duncan is questionable for the individual 1-meter competition later in the week.

Kristen Hayden (Hillsborough, N.J.), who was originally slated to dive mixed synchronized 3-meter with Henninger, has picked up two more events. Hailey Hernandez (Southlake, Texas) withdrew after deciding to take a break from competition this summer, and Hayden will pick up the individual 3-meter event. Additionally, Hayden and Brooke Schultz (Columbia, S.C.) will now compete in synchronized 3-meter. USA Diving’s High Performance Director and World Championships coach members evaluated the women’s springboard divers on the team and determined Hayden and Schultz offered the best potential pairing in Hernandez’ absence.

Two-time Olympian Katrina Young (Shoreline, Wash.) was added to the roster after Tarrin Gilliland (Liberty Hill, Texas) withdrew due to injury. Young will pair up with Olympian Delaney Schnell (Tucson, Ariz.) in the women’s synchronized 10-meter. Young and Schnell have competed together in the past, and the High Performance Director and Committee for Competitive Excellence used past performances to determine Schnell’s new partner for the World Championships. Both divers have had international success in synchronized diving; Schnell won silver in the event at the Olympic Games a year ago, and Young won bronze at the 2019 World Championships.

Schnell will take Gilliland’s place in the mixed synchronized 10-meter event and will compete with Carson Tyler (Moultrie, Ga.).
