Greg Brandes (Upstate NY Diving) has been named a finalist for the 2026 Positive Coaching Alliance (PCA) Coach of the Year Award, recognizing his decades-long commitment to athlete development and positive coaching practices. Brandes was one of 28 national finalists.

Brandes has spent more than 23 years coaching at the University of Rochester and 20 years with Upstate New York Diving, guiding athletes from beginner levels through the Olympic pathway. His coaching philosophy centers on trust, growth and respect, values that align closely with PCA’s mission to ensure positive youth sports experiences.

“I have never been one for awards or recognition,” Brandes said. “But being recognized as a PCA finalist is very meaningful to me as it recognizes a long-term commitment to coaching athletes the right way, not just achieving results.”

Brandes emphasized the importance of fostering a supportive environment where athletes feel valued as people, noting that positive culture drives confidence, resilience and long-term success in sport.

“Advocating for a positive sports environment is essential because athletes perform, develop and stay in the sport when they feel supported and valued,” he said. “Thank you so much to Cliff Devries for nominating me and all those who wrote letters of recommendation.”

The PCA Coach of the Year Award honors coaches who teach life lessons through sport.
