Nike Agunbiade/Katrina Young win silver medal in synchronized platform at World Cup

Nike Agunbiade (Unattached) and Katrina Young (Trojan Dive Club) won the silver medal in the women’s 10-meter synchronized event Friday at the FINA Diving World Cup in Berlin.


Agunbiade and Young, competing together for the first time, scored 261.54 points in the synchronized 10-meter competition. Their highest-scoring dive came in round three, when they scored 62.10 points on their forward 3 ½ somersaults pike. China’s pair of Chen Yuxi and Quan Hongchan scored 349.80 for first.


In the men’s 10-meter synchronized event, Zachary Cooper (Miami Diving) and Max Flory (Miami Diving) were in the hunt for bronze but came up short by .63 points as they finished fourth with 334.25 points. Cooper and Flory's highest scoring dive came in the fifth round with their back 2½ somersaults with 2½ twists pike scoring 66.96 points. China’s team of Lian Junjie  and Yang Hao won gold with 444.84 points, and Germany’s Timo Barthel and Lou Massenberg won silver at 345.33. Colombia’s Sebastian Villa and Alejandro Solarte narrowly edged the U.S. team for the final spot on the podium.


Carson Tyler (Johansen Diving Academy) finished 11th with 327.15 points in the individual men’s 3-meter final. Tyler maintained a top-10 placement through the early part of the competition but missed his final two dives to drop to 11th in the final standings. His strongest dive came in the third round  with 73.10 points on his forward 2½ somersaults with two twists pike. China continued its dominant performance, with Zongyuan Wang and Yuan Cao winning gold (562.20) and silver (513.85), respectively. Germany’s Moritz Wesemann took bronze at 432.40.


Competition at the Berlin World Cup continues through Sunday. Saturday’s competition begins at 8 a.m. EDT with the women's synchronized 3-meter event followed by men's synchronized 3-meter and women's individual platform final.
