USA Finishes Sixth in Two Synchro Events at World Aquatics Championships

Team USA finished sixth in two synchronized diving events Monday at the World Aquatics Championships in Singapore.
Grayson Campbell (Vienna, Va.) and Jack Ryan (Denver, Colo.) were sixth in men’s synchronized 3-meter, while Bayleigh Cranford (Jamestown, N.C.) and Daryn Wright (Plainfield, Ind.) were sixth in women’s synchronized 10-meter.
China won gold in both events, with Mexico taking both silvers.
In men’s 3-meter synchro, Campbell and Ryan scored 374.82 points. In seventh place with one round to go, they finished with 74.55 points on a reverse 1 ½ with 3 ½ twists to move up to sixth. The Chinese duo of Wang Zongyuan and Zheng Jiuyuan scored 467.31 for gold, with the Mexican team of Juan Celaya and Osmar Olvera taking silver at 449.28. Great Britain’s Anthony Harding and Jack Laugher were third with 405.33 points.
In women’s 10-meter synchro, Cranford and Wright scored 274.41 points. Like Campbell and Ryan, they also were in seventh place with one round to go. They finished with 74.25 points on a back 3 ½ tuck to move up one spot in the final standings. China’s Chen Yuxi and Zhang Minjie won gold with 349.26 points. Mexico’s Gabriela Agundez and Alejandra Estudillo claimed silver with 304.80 points, and Jo Jin Mi and Kim Mi Hwa of the People’s Republic of Korea scored 293.34 for bronze.
Diving events at the World Aquatics Championships continue through August 3. Tuesday’s events feature women’s synchronized 3-meter (preliminaries at 9 p.m. ET on Monday, with finals at 3:30 a.m. ET) and men’s synchronized 10-meter (preliminaries at midnight ET and finals at 5:30 a.m. ET). Lily Witte/Bailee Sturgill and Carson Tyler/Joshua Hedberg will represent the U.S. in those events. Competition will be streamed on Peacock.
