Cranford/Wills Place Fifth in Mixed Synchronized 10-Meter at World Aquatics Championships

Bayleigh Cranford (Jamestown, N.C.) and Tyler Wills (Carmel, Ind.) placed fifth in mixed synchronized 10-meter Sunday at the World Aquatics Championships in Singapore.
Cranford, who will compete in three events at the World Championships, began her busy week by pairing with Wills for 296.13 points in the mixed synchro contest. They were in 10th after two rounds but moved up to fifth after three solid optional dives. They scored 72.42 points on a reverse 3 ½ tuck and 72.27 on a back 3 ½ tuck.
China’s Zhu Yongxin and Xie Peiling won gold with 323.04 points, narrowly edging Choe Wi Hyon and Jo Jin Mi of the People’s Republic of Korea by just .06 points. Team Neutral Athletes Aleksandr Bondar and Anna Konanykhina took bronze with 311.88 points.
Sunday’s competition also included the men’s 1-meter contest.
Nick Harris (Chester Springs, Pa.) placed 16th in the 1-meter preliminaries in his first World Championships. He scored 339.80 points, highlighted by 60.80 points on a front 2 ½ with one twist and 59.40 on a front 3 ½ pike. Lyle Yost (Shaker Heights, Ohio) was 30th with 304.70 points, including 59.20 points on his front 2 ½ with one twist.
China’s Zheng Jiuyhan scored 443.70 points for the 1-meter gold. Mexico’s Osmar Olvera took silver at 429.60, and China’s Yan Siyu won bronze with 405.50.
Diving events at the World Aquatics Championships continue through August 3. Monday’s competition features men’s synchronized 3-meter and women’s synchronized 10-meter. Grayson Campbell and Jack Ryan will dive in the men’s 3-meter synchro event (prelims at 10 p.m. ET on Sunday, with finals at 4 a.m.). Cranford will dive with Daryn Wright in the women’s 10-meter synchro event (prelims at 1:30 a.m. ET and finals at 6 a.m. ET). Competition will be streamed on Peacock.
